Location
Childress, the County Seat of Childress County, was established in 1876. Childress is located 116 miles southeast of Amarillo, 139 miles northeast of Lubbock, and 108 miles northwest of Wichita Falls on Highways 83 & 287. Highway 83 is a direct route from Mexico to Canada.
Climate
The climate in Childress is great for farming with a growing season of 217 days out of the year. Temperatures are moderate according to the season. The average annual temperature is 61.5 degrees and the average rainfall for the year is 23.59 inches.
Physical Features
Its physical features are rolling prairie, draining to Prairie Dog Town Fork of Red River; mixed soils. Lakes Childress and Baylor Creek Lake provide fishing recreation and camping. Hunting in the area bring those seeking quail, turkey, deer and wild hog.

Agriculture
Childress has a healthy blend of agri-business and light industry. Cotton farming is the primary farming operation for the farming history in the country. Agriculture income is earned primarily from cotton, wheat, hay, grain sorghums, peanuts, cattle, and some Angora goats are raised in the area. Childress has an abundant water supply with a superior rating. Irrigated lands and dry land farming is predominate in the area. Good results for food processing and varied markets are evident.
